About me

Benjamin Taylor

I am an artisan-craftsman who has lived and worked for my entire career in the Downham Market area.

I have always enjoyed my carpentry and am lucky enough to have worked on many prestigious projects including being the lead tutor on eight separate Prince’s Foundation design and build courses. Making a vernacular building with a group of twenty students of various abilities and experience, Prince Charles would visit on day fifteen, no pressure then.

I have a spacious workshop packed with woodwork machinery and tools. For many years I have been refining my skills and techniques, as you can see from my photographs, I make unusual one off  items.

History

Est 1969 by Mr Alan Taylor

The business was set up by my father, Alan Taylor, in 1969. Trading as Alan Taylor and Sons, his reputation as a skilled artist and carpenter grew through word–of–mouth. He worked extensively on bespoke projects for local estates and also made candlesticks for St. Edmund’s Church.

With dad away on holiday in 1980 I made myself a turned bed. This was enough to inspire me to work with my father and learn the trade.

I grew up with dad building unusual, creative things all around me. High quality design, materials and craftsmanship are second nature to me. It’s hard for me not to notice details, good or bad.

Every thing I make is bespoke or to order. I like to use traditional techniques such as draw boring or wedged mortice and tenons and am meticulous about using good quality materials.

I have worked on old buildings and enjoy restoring good quality small buildings, bell towers, conservatories, summerhouses etc. I have been keenly restoring and building my own barn conversion with modern extension, with many quality materials old and new, often re-claimed and usually locally sourced.
