About me
Working with wood
Since moving to College farm in 1999 I have been restoring and converting the buildings to suit my needs. The farm house was first to get a full refurbishment, It was important to get Mum settled in and comfortable.
I managed to secure EU/EEDA funding in order to convert an ex-piggery into my wood workshop. This was a big project in itself, re-concreting the floor, fitting a large roller door, insulating, making and fitting the doors and windows also a huge re-wire. Finally installing my machinery etc.
Hay Barn at College Farm
Here’s the barn and lean-to, as I bought it, in 1999. Complete with a heavily tarred corrugated tin roof.
Freshly Thatched
The job I had been waiting to get my teeth into was converting the old hay barn into my home. From underpinning, resurrecting and repairing the walls to rebuilding the roof. I also managed to secure a grant towards thatching the roof in water reed.
Galvanised Superstructure Installed
I then designed the modern extension to echo the existing lean-to cow shed. Once the exhaustive structural documents had been approved I actually made the steel superstructure here, with the help of my welder friend. The day I erected it was miraculous, it fitted the footings perfectly. This building has a green roof and the front wall is made up of sliding glass panels.
Biomass Heating
ETA hack 90 wood chip boiler with expansion tank and 2000 litre buffer tank, heats the workshop, Hay barn, College farm house and the annexe.
Every thing I make is bespoke or to order. I like to use traditional techniques such as draw boring or wedged mortice and tenons and am meticulous about using good quality materials.
I have worked on old buildings and enjoy restoring good quality small buildings, bell towers, conservatories, summerhouses etc. I have been keenly restoring and building my own barn conversion with modern extension, with many quality materials old and new, often re-claimed and usually locally sourced.
